The Moth Ship is LVJ’s main space ship, it’s in the film from the very first scene right through to the end credits so some time has been spent on designing and creating it. All in all there have been three incarnations of the ship at various stages of the films production, but the one featured to the right here is the final variation. The first version had a hemispherical motif that ran through a lot of the other alien tech design. There were also a pair of what can best be described as fins at the rear that would act as a kind of steering mechanism. For version two the fins morphed into engines, again, hemispherical in design, while the front end became considerably more bulky.
It was at this point when the design headed down a new path. There was an idea that the main spaceship would now become a kind of ‘Tug’ ship that would attach itself using clamps onto another ship, which would vary depending on what the purpose was behind the ship. So a scout ship would have a specific design while a troop/assault carrier (which is the one seen in the movie) would look completely different. The troop/assault carrier can be seen here, resembling a big barrel attached to the Moth Ship.
Although the hemispherical motif has finally been dropped, it still remains suitably chunky and the large engines at the back have retained the same movement that the ‘fins’ from the first design had, although they’re now more akin to the vector engines as seen on a Harrier. There are also a couple of very cool features about the Moth Ship that aren’t shown here, which we’ll reveal at a later date.
